About Core 1000 Words
A free, focused tool for one job: helping English speakers learn the most common words of a new language.
Many learners spend their first months on words they rarely meet again. Starting with the most frequent words gives you the most coverage for your effort. Core 1000 Words pairs a frequency-ranked list with spaced repetition, so you review each word just often enough to keep it.
What it is, and what it isn’t
- It’s a vocabulary foundation. It isn’t a full course and won’t make you fluent by itself.
- It’s free. There’s no paid tier and no limits on study. In the future the site may show a small number of ads on reading pages, never during study.
- It works without an account. An account is optional and only needed to keep progress in sync across devices.
- It doesn’t include audio yet.
Languages
Spanish is the first deck. Other languages will be added only once a full 1,000-word deck passes the same checks.
Who reviews the content
The word list comes from open frequency data. Meanings and examples were written for this project and checked automatically. They haven’t yet been reviewed by a native speaker, and we’ll say so on the site until they are. See how it works and sources and corrections.
